Matthew Bosch Ride For Cancer 2026
- 18 February 2026
- South Head
You may have seen a cat sculpture in the garden beside the church. Look closely, and you will see that it was made in memory of Matthew Bosch, who died of cancer in 1995, aged 11. Some in the congregation might remember him. He used to blow raspberries at Laurie Bartlett a previous minister and would make friends with older ladies who are no longer with us.

Tanya and Eddie Bosch, his parents, are embarking on a ride to remember him and to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute. They will ride from their place in Bondi all the way to Federation Square in Melbourne, taking back roads that include some gravel, and will stay indoors. 1,103 kilometres, 18 riding days and 5 rest days. They will carry the things they need.
Why? Tanya thinks that doing a trip like this mimics Matt’s life. Tough but beautiful. It is good to get away and only think about finishing the day, eating, sleeping and of course thinking about Matt.

Matt had a simple faith. He really loved Jesus. This verse from Corinthians sums him up. I realise that Paul was writing about the cross, but I like to think of Matt when I read this:
1 Corinthians 1:27 “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
