Not Just Vintage But Valuable!

Last weekend St Michaels hosted another epic Vintage Fair with just over $17,000 raised for Nungalinya College by the clothing sale, tearoom and book fair.
And what a fun day two days it was! The lead up was less than auspicious with a power blackout threatened and torrential rain in the days ahead. However Saturday dawned, the sun shone; the lights came on; and the crowds came.
The upper hall was abuzz! So lovely to see familiar faces, welcome back occasional visitors and meet those who had come to the church premises for the very first time. We were told by many that they looked forward to the fair each year and make a special trip to come.

Naturally, there were clothing bargains aplenty – vintage jackets, retro frocks, and that just-right scarf you didn’t know you needed. Who would miss the sunny tearoom with its delicious food and views of the sparkling harbour? While everyone declared they already had too many books at home – it is a truth universally acknowledged that few can resist when a bargain book calls their name!
Some special mentions are required. First and foremost, to Jennifer Glasson who for close to 20 years has been sorting, hanging and organising those vintage, and not so vintage clothes. Plus, her army of very loyal helpers. Mags Mead did an extraordinary job in the tearoom – and what a happy place it was with the hum of conversation and the clink of fine china. I was ably assisted on the bookstall by my lovely volunteers and family, and we all enjoyed chatting to visitors about the books we love.

Plus, a standing ovation for Eddie Bosch – master of the missing table, wrangler of heavy boxes, rearranger of furniture, and all-round miracle worker. I can’t count the number of times when if someone had a problem – the solution would be “let’s ask Eddie.”
The Vintage Fair is more than just a fundraiser, it is a true community event, bringing outsiders in; and letting insiders get involved and get to know others. A genuine success story..
