Three Minutes With… Doreen Laforest

My earliest memory is . . . being at Calvary Baptist Church with my parents with an American Pastor shouting about hell and damnation with sweat pouring down his face. He was pounding his well-worn black leather-covered Bible that he clutched in his hand. I still remember the Bible had gold dusted edges with half-circle cut-outs indicating the books of the Bible. I was petrified.

I grew up . . .  in an American community in Taiwan until I was 13, when we moved to Australia. I lived in Vaucluse and attended Kambala and St Michaels’. I’m currently living in Dover Heights.

As a child I wanted to be . . . a ballerina, or pianist but God had other plans for me. After Uni and working out on my own for a while, I got involved in the family business.  Some 36 years later I own the company and am still running it! I am still involved with music thankfully, but ballet went out the door decades ago!

On my next holiday . . .  I plan to see more of Australia, particularly country NSW.

When I have first time visitors to Sydney . . .  I always recommend a trip on our beautiful harbour.

I found lockdown . . . to be a time when I discovered a real closeness with God and learned so much more about Him and His Grace, and for that I am really grateful.

I have a long history at St Michael’s . . . because I went to school at Kambala, was confirmed by then Rev Ken Short, and was involved in the wonderful Youth Fellowship back in the 1970’s.

I decided to become a Church Warden . . .  because I was asked to! I would like to be able to offer my time and skills to the position.
